Map sources
- In the Evliya Çelebi Way guidebook, there is a colour contour map of the route. Apart from this, there are few useful and accessible maps of this part of Turkey.
We list some below:
- 1:250,000 Turkish Harita Genel Komuntanlığı maps. Available only from the General Command of Mapping (Harita Genel Komutanlığı) in Dikmen, Ankara; cost is about 15$ per sheet. Information about a variety of Turkish maps is available on the HGM site.
- 1:500,000 US Defense Mapping Agency topographical maps of Turkey (5 sheets) are available fromStanfords, Covent Garden, London.
- 1:800,000 Geo Center Euro-map of West Turkey; generally available.
- 1:500,000 Kartographischer Verlag Reinhard Rybors; generally available.
The following website is in Russian (Cyrillic script); the maps were produced in the 1970s and so are not up-to-date, but very useful for finding old roads:
GPS points
To convert the above files to the format you would like, try the following:
James Associates Mac GPS Pro; For Mac users – will convert text files into .klm for viewing in Google Earth and .gpx files for Garmin GPS.
It also allows Mac users to plot points and routes onto a scanned topo map, and up-and download points to your GPS. It is also interactive; with a GPS connected you can follow your movements on a topo map live. Brilliant software, recommended.
for PC users, GPSBabel allows you to convert these files for different makes and models of GPS.
