Nature walks are among the most beneficial activities for both our physical and mental health. However, rising temperatures and the increasing risk of forest fires in the summer months necessitate some additional precautions for trekkers. For this reason, it is of great importance to be more conscious, prepared and careful during summer walks, especially in forested areas.

Forest Fire Risk and Entry Restrictions
It is always forbidden to light fires and camp in forest areas. This becomes even more important as the weather gets warmer in the summer months. During the summer months, especially in July and August, the risk of forest fires increases significantly with increasing heat and drought. Failure to comply with this prohibition can both cause great damage to nature and lead to serious legal sanctions. In addition, in some regions, temporary access restrictions to forest areas are imposed by the authorities. These restrictions are applied to protect nature and prevent fires. Before planning your trek, you can learn about the current situation of the relevant region from official sources.

High Temperature and Dehydration Risk
One of the biggest dangers encountered while trekking in summer is dehydration. High temperatures increase sweating and accelerate the loss of water and minerals in the body. Therefore, you should make sure that you consume enough water and salt. It is very important to drink water frequently during the walk, to have drinks containing electrolytes with you and to replace the minerals lost through sweat. Starting walking early in the morning and resting between 11:00 – 16:00, the hottest hours of the day, will reduce the risk of sunstroke and excessive fatigue.

Route Selection in Summer
In July and August, it is not recommended to hike on routes close to sea level, in low-level forests and open areas. In these areas, towards the end of the summer, water sources may be dry and temperatures above 40degrees C. During these periods, cool and high altitude routes such as those in the Kaçkars offer more suitable alternatives. The high altitude allows you to feel the heat less and gives you the chance to discover a different face of nature. However, since these routes also have their own difficulties, they should be trekked with good preparation and appropriate equipment.

Walk safely and in harmony with nature
Remember, nature is a home where we are guests. For this reason, protecting nature, following the rules and taking the necessary precautions for our own safety is of great importance for both us and other living things. When trekking in summer, you should definitely bring sunscreen cream, a hat, sunglasses and light-coloured, sweat absorbing clothes. At the same time, plan your route in advance, and notify your family or contacts, especially if you are trekking alone.

We hope you enjoy nature and have a healthy hiking experience!
