Sounding Art Trail, a collaborative project by CRS (Turkey) and North Downs Way (United Kingdom), launches on 15 February. This site-specific art project explores the intersection of land art, cultural heritage, and ecology through immersive soundscapes and participatory workshops, and will be supported for one year by the British Council’s Connections Through Culture programme.
Taking place along two long-distance trails, North Downs Way (Kent, UK) and the Lycian Way (Turkey), the project brings together two independent sound artists and local communities living in rural areas along the routes through sound and walking workshops. In doing so, it aims to transform cultural routes into new spaces for sensory engagement and critical reflection.
During field trips to areas along both trails that are particularly vulnerable to climate change, natural and human-made sounds will be collected and composed into original soundscapes reflecting the ecological and cultural character of each site. Using sound as both medium and message, the project seeks to creatively draw attention to urgent global challenges such as climate change, rural depopulation, and social fragmentation through place-based artistic practice. The resulting soundscapes will be accessible via QR codes installed along the trails, offering a way to blend physical landscapes with digital experience.
