The academic council of the Sultans Trail organised a symposium titled ‘Close Encounters of East and West’ in the Hodshon Huis, Haarlem, on August 26th 2022.
Before the conference, guests gathered for a short boat trip on the canals of Haarlem, followed by a pleasant meal in a charming old pub. The conference venue is a beautiful historic house on the canals of Haarlem old town, a meeting place for the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. The photographs in the halls reflect their scientific visitors and members, including Einstein and Madame Curie.
The speakers on the programme, while not quite so distinguished, included several academics who spoke on the development of the cultures of southeastern Europe, finishing with Dr Aleksandra Terziç who asked if the Ottoman heritage is SE Europe a viable subject for tourism?
Over and again, the lecturers expressed how the 500 years of Ottoman occupation of the Balkans are seen as a period of oppression of the local peoples, the church and culture in general. There is an inbuilt resistance to the idea of Turkish – Ottoman history, and thus the Sultans Trail, fanned by both cultural/educational/religious prejudices of church and state.
Fortunately, after lunch, Mehmet Tütüncü spoke on an early friendship treaty between the Porte and the Dutch republic, negotiated by the Levantine Dragoman Testa. The Ottoman state was the first to recognise the Netherlands as an independent country and conclude advantageous trading arrangements.
Several speakers described their experiences on the trail, and Prof. Vanneste again emphasised the use of Cultural Routes as a basis for non-traditional tourism. Other speakers also covered the subject of pilgrimage tourism. Kate Clow discussed experiences with the Cultural Routes of the Council of Europe as a way to achieving recognition for trails.
Finally, a discussion on the future of the Sultans Trail concluded proceedings.
Sedat Çakır who devised the trail, the organiser Ton Warts, and chair Jan Pronk received well-deserved votes of thanks.
