Second phase of our VOYN! project, which is a local culture hub under the “VAHA: Building Common Ground for Spaces of Public Discussion & Dialogue” programme, has just started in the last months. We aim to chase the rural cultural heritage of the Antalya region via several activities; and this year we have an international collaboration with Altenburg from Germany: consisting of culture institutions named as Iz Futura, Stadt Forum Altenburg and Other Music Academy. In the following year, we will organise field trips, workshops and other activities in order to collect cultural objects and stories that are belonging to Antalya and around. At the end of the project, we will host an exhibition to present the “Cabinet of Local Wonders” in both Antalya and villages on the route.
Our first field visit took place last weekend in the ancient site of Sidyma along the Lycian Way. We have collected information on daily life practices and hand-made rug weaving tradition through the interviews with local residents of Dodurga Village which is set within the Sidyma ruins. The aim of the field visit was to form the content of workshops we plan to hold in Spring 2022. We have also learned some local carpet patterns from Fatma Mete, who also gives an accommodation service for hikers at Sidyma Homes.
We went to Kovanlık Village as our second field visit in order to meet Ayşe Taç, one of the master weavers of Döşemealtı Carpet, which is a significant cultural heritage asset of Antalya with a geographical indication. We have gained knowledge on how she learned local carpet patterns while she was helping her mother by holding a gas lamp when she was 8. She still spins her wool and dyes them with natural plant based dyes.
